The Landmine Ladies - a group of women clear landmines in Cambodia.
The people of Cambodia have been heavily impacted by the use of landmines planted during the ousting of the Khmer Rouge in 1979 and throughout the 80s and 90s. To this day landmine clearing teams are searching for the hidden devastating dangers, especially in rural areas. According to the Mine Advisory Group over 64,000 casualties and more than 25,000 amputees have been recorded since 1979.
All female-clearance groups are instrumental for the ongoing effort to make the people of Cambodia safe. The group says that there is a clear advantage to all female teams as they are more sufficient in their work. “We spend our evenings at home and don’t spend our money on alcohol and sex workers, so we don’t turn up to work hung over and send most of our wages to our families and take great pride in being able to do so”.
